Get into the mindset of blogging

In her latest blog post, Sharon Hammond of UK200Group member firm Roffe Swayne gives her top tips on blogging.

Another hectic day at work - and then a little message pops up “can you let me have a blog please?” and the first thought is “Eek! What am I going to write about?” It’s only felt like a few days since my last one! How on earth am I going to think of a topic? Sound familiar?

With everyone online and jostling for that top position in Google, blogging needs to be on everyone’s agenda. Sharing this task with colleagues on a rota is a great way to spread the load.

Whilst some people have no problem writing a blog ‘on the hoof’, others suffer from hideous ‘writer’s block’, staring at a blank Word document wondering what to write about.

If this resonates with you, then here are a few tips to help you plan ahead for your next blog.

1. Think about questions colleagues or clients ask you or problems they face. Keep a file or scribble it in a notebook at the time you are asked, so you can refer to it later.

2. What’s topical? Is there a news story you can add your thoughts and opinion to? Don’t sit on the fence, tell others your opinion, your readers will either agree or disagree, but either way you will start a conversation.

3. Keep a list of the blogs you have written already. If something changes, you can always revisit and update an older blog making it current again.

4. Turn to Google. They have a great tool – Google Trends where you can search what people are Googling. Just type in a keyword, you can filter by country and timeframe to see if there are any areas that you could write about.

5. Case studies are always a good one. Is there an interesting project you have been working on, to share your expertise?

If you need further incentive - I recently read a blog on a Linked In post that stated that buyers can be as much as 90% of the way through their buying decision before they speak to a human. So demonstrating your expertise in a blog can only help your potential clients to find you.
