Members & Friends remember David Turnbull

It is a couple of years since I last met David, but I will now treasure a chance meeting with him and Ritchie Robinson in the EIC which lasted for several drinks!

Anthony Harris - Critcheys

David was a close friend and one of a kind. We will miss him greatly.

Clint Bateman - International Associate

I will always remember David for the good times we shared.

David Shawcross - Anderson Barrowcliff

It was through David that our firm joined UK200Group and later IAPA and over the years I have had great interaction with him at conferences and on committees where we debated matters in a lively, spirited manner but with great respect for each other.

He set a benchmark that will be difficult to surpass. As we say in Irish, Ní fheicimid a leithead arís (We will not see his like again)

Gerrry McInerney - International Associate

I have great memories of David from the beginning of the UK200Group circa 1986, and I learnt a great deal from him about reaching for the seemingly impossible. His ideas were always way ahead of the rest of us, and it was a privilege to work so closely with him in those early years. We all worked hard to make a success of the Group, and David worked harder than any of us to draw together so many firms of accountants so that we were able to help each other in many ways and through the strength of numbers. He was also always the life and soul of the meetings, and we all enjoyed the social side of David's arrangements as well as the work aspects.

I retired from Hart Shaw in 1994, but the time connected with David and the many visits we made to France, Germany and Austria, as well as various venues in Britain have remained as highlights in my career. He was a man to whom nothing was impossible.

Ian Wall - Past President

David was an inspirational character and we will all miss him.

John Husband - John F Harvey

We were there at the beginning of the group and met with David on a regular basis. He used to say he was an honorary Yorkshire man because he married a Yorkshire Lass. We reckoned she was a missionary bringing to all people south of the Pennines. I particularly enjoyed the banter.

He will be sadly missed.

Keith Lyons - Lambert Roper & Horsfield

I always got on well with David and had great respect for him and all he achieved

Peter Homent - Hardcastle Burton

Whatever I have gathered over the years, he was a gentleman and peer among the peer enshrining qualities of humbleness and firm believer of code of conduct of life.

PK Chopra - International Associate

I remember David's visit to our office when we were looking at joining. 100% enthusiasm and commitment. He had that ability to remember names and make you feel really special. I shall remember that for a very long while.

Richard Barnett - Howard Worth

The UK200Group owes much to David. It is a great loss.

Tony Warren - Howell Wade

He will certainly be remembered by the partners at Baines as a man with great vision and exceptional talents in many areas.

Trevor Cook - Baines Jewitt

David was one of the most charismatic people I have ever met which happily I was able to tell him the last time I met him. I shall try to attend the funeral. Are donations to charity being invited in lieu of flowers? If so, do you have details?

David Whiscombe - Berg Kaprow Lewis

David was a man of great vision and the UK200Group has much to be thankful to him for. One of David's many talents was that whenever he met you he always greeted you by name and with genuine warmth, instantly putting you at ease.

Nick Willis - George Hay

Having been in the UK200Group for as long as we at Alexander Myerson & Co have and having been involved personally all that time, I remember David very well.

He was one of life's characters, of which, I'm afraid, there seem to be so few nowadays. Without that character I don't suppose he would have started the group off at all.

We also owe a debt of gratitude to him because, without the UK200Group and all that goes with it, I don't suppose we'd have been as successful as we have been over the years.

John McCormick- Alexander Myerson

On behalf of all directors of HMH I wish to offer our sincere condolences to Betty and David's family on his passing. We were very saddened to hear the news.

HMH goes back to 1983 as a member of IAPA and subsequently UK200Group. We have been involved with the IAPA via our membership of the executive committee and we remember great times with David and others - Stanley M, Morten KC to name but a few - at those meetings and of course the annual conferences. David was a great inspiration to us all with his dedication and enthusiasm. He was also a great supporter of the Australians in the IAPA membership for which we are very grateful.

The IAPA and UK200Group are both now significant organisations, which without David's foresight and hard work would not be where they are today. He has left a remarkable legacy.
